Fresh install of SharePoint 2010 Enterprise on a fresh Server 2008 R2 VM - default single-server isntallation. Installation succeeded so I ran the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard. I had to run it a couple times to eventually get to step 8 where it is creating the sample data. This is where it failed and it continues to do so. Here is the error from the log, I'm not sure what to check/do in order to fix this.

That occurs a few times - sounds like it's complaining about a missing HTTPS binding - and then farther down...

Did you put in the hotfix for R2? I've done this before with success.

Jie Li mentions the hotfix and steps on his blog - Link

athough it mentions Beta I believe this is still needed for R2

  • Thanks. That actually didn't work because it's not a valid hotfix for my system. But I did install some pending Windows Updates and ran it again. This time I am getting SQL timeouts so that's...better?

  • Better but I don't recall much about that except making sure that your SQL account has the right permissions.

I accepted your answer because 1) it was the only answer and 2) it reminded me to install pending updates which ended up getting me passed the error. Thanks.
