After a fair amount of Google-fu I finally found a MS KB article that helped. You have to open Regedit.exe and add a new DWORD value OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Internet and set it to 1. Now clicking on a link will open the file in edit mode, which is fine for my purposes.

The SharePoint / Office integration works best with Internet Explorer because the ActiveX that is required by many SharePoint components only runs in IE. Other browsers use different APIs. If you want the full functionality of Office with SharePoint you will need to use IE. IE 11 is actually not all that bad.

There's a much easier way that I just discovered - edit the multi-line column and save it as plain text only. Go back in to edit it a second time, and you can change it to a single line of text.

Have you checked to see if the Unit Lookup column that you are trying to match had its items entered in the exact same order? I had a similar issue where my lookups all died because the lookup value is not exactly the same. The only reason to use Office 64 bit is if you're working with HUGE documents (usually excel or access) which are to big to losd in the 32 bit version. No it's not possible ootb, but you can get a better view if you synchronize the SharePoint calendar to the client software Outlook 2013. That way you are able to see both calendars side by side.

The problem is that OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive Pro) will not sync with a SharePoint 2010 server. The MS KB article 2904784 points out that if you intend to sync with a SharePoint 2010 server then you must use SharePoint 2010 Workspace for folder sync. With SharePoint Designer 2013 uninstalled, I repeated the aforementioned process of disabling Office 2010's SharePoint Foundation Support and then running Repair on Office 2010. This is the same behavior in 2010 as well in Firefox and Chrome and I believe it is still one of the few remaining ActiveX controls in SharePoint. Users must have Office 2010, Office 2007, or Microsoft Office 2003 with the latest service ...
