A server configured with a database administration role, such as SQL Server, that houses some or all of the databases used by SharePoint. These databases include the administration database, content database(s), and databases for the different services, such as user profile service and search service.

Databases are mounted in a management studio application and are typically stored on a separate drive from the operating system for performance reasons. Databases range in size from very small (~1MB) to extremely large (200+GB). Their function and health are maintained by the database server on which they are mounted.
