I need to populate user profile properties from a flat file as the properties do not exist in AD. These fields include title and department, among others. Azure AD Connect has not yet been installed in this environment. My question is that if I disable syncing for certain attributes in Azure AD Connect, will those fields be overwritten by the 'AD Import' process in the Office 365 user synchronization pipeline?

The AD Import process will synchronize regardless if the properties are populated or not. This means that yes, your populated values will be overwritten by blank values.

  • Is there any way for me to sync these values? – James Grizzle May 16 '17 at 16:50
  • Use SharePoint on-prem would be your only option. – Trevor Seward May 16 '17 at 16:52
  • I can at least envision using entirely new fields instead of those synced to Active Directory. – James Grizzle May 16 '17 at 17:07
  • What if after disabling the sync for those properties from AD to Azure AD, I I update the Azure AD fields directly? Is that a possibility? – James Grizzle May 16 '17 at 17:23
  • You could update the Azure AD fields directly, that should work. – Trevor Seward May 16 '17 at 17:23
