I see the following errors in ULS when trying to create a new User Profile Service application for my on-premise 2013 server:

I deleted the previous UPS application from the Manage Service Applications page and removed the three databases from the SQL server.

I've tried an iisreset and full reboot.

SharePoint Configuration tool:

farm details listed correctly but tries to recreate central admin site, error:

An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException was thrown.

Additional exception information: A SharePoint Central Administration service instance does not exist in the server

farm and therefore the SharePoint Central Administration Web Application cannot be provisioned. A SharePoint

Central Administration service instance should have been created when the server was joined to a server farm. To

avoid this failure, you may have to disconnect and then reconnect this server to the server farm

Few trouble shooting steps below that will resolve the problem:

  1. make sure the apppool account has proper rights and its in good state meaning not locked.

2.Did you tried with powershell as some times the user context might not be taking it correctly.

  1. Be sure that your account to be in the farm admin group.

  2. Since the error is related to "object reference" problems. Verify the server is in farm and try running the config wizard so it will correct if there are any problems.

  3. re-verify all the patch levels on all the servers in the farm and install as needed.

  4. As a last choice, if you have tried all the above steps then try to move the service to a different server in the farm.

  • thanks for your reply, I've verified 1,3,5 and added the error messages from 2 & 6 to the original post

  • so it shows that the server is not properly connected to the farm. can you correct that first and then create the user profile service. Also you dont need to host/provision the CA at multiple servers in the farm ideally one web server should be enough to host the CA for the Farm

  • i would suggest to validate the sharepoint patches and install them.also remove the server from the same wizard and re-join.

  • thanks. having rejoined the farm I no longer have problems running the config wizard but I'm still seeing the object reference not set when attempting to create the UPA. I tested all the svc apps, only ones that don't get the error are excel, access, search, visio and work management services.
