Try to use SPWorkflowEventReceiver. If I'm not wrong the WorkflowPostponed is invokinginvoked when the exception is trownthrown. In this method you have access to the SPWorkflowEventProperties. There are ErrorException and ErrorMessage properties that can be used by you.
