comment Is SPUtility.MakeBrowserCacheSafeLayoutsUrl Method useful at all?
Just to add: Refreshed if the file content changes. Very important to note, because the MD5 hash is calculated on the file contents, hence if the file contents don't change, the MD5 doesn't change even if it is being regenerated.

comment How to avoid caching issue when using custom JavaScript and CSS deployed under _layouts?
Just to update on Denis' comment (and his question here: sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/85984/…) - MakeBrowserCacheSafeLayoutsUrl works as advertised. The Cache is cleared with each IISRESET.

comment SharePoint 2013 Usage Reports - where are the details?
This question was about SP2013. The Usage Logging infrastructure has changed significantly. The database and the stored procedures still exist and I can leverage it to build custom reports, yes. But the question was about seeing reports for the end user.

comment Managed Metadata Navigation Security Trimming
When using pages they are security trimmed - that is actually where MS wants to have you use managed metadata navigation. But there are of course more things in the SharePoint world: Team Sites, document libraries, lists, list views etc. - all of these are not security trimmed.

comment Where to save farm-wide settings and configuration data?
Problem is that you can only store small things in the secure store (I don't know the restriction, but it is around 255 characters per value). Furthermore the secure store is "supposed" to be for credentials, not settings. It is a valid idea though!

comment Where to save farm-wide settings and configuration data?
Yes and no. Farm Property bag has the same problem as does the SPPersistedObject - only Farm Administrators can write and read from the property bag. Of course I would like to have "regular" users be able to read the setting as well (e.g. global navigation settings). sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/70667/… - also some posts suggest that writing to the farm property bag might corrupt the config db which of course is less desirable.

comment Can SPPersistedObject settings be updated by normal users if ran with elevated privileges?
SPPersitedObjects are still the best there is for farm wide settings. web.config is pretty ugly, but so is giving RW access to your config DB for your webapp accounts...

comment SharePoint 2013 and Outlook task synchronization without Exchange 2013?
Yes it is. Did you read my question? "Can I go back to the "old way" of synchronizing task lists by just disabling / stopping the work management service application? Does the "old way" (clicking the synchronize button, Outlook directly starts) still exist or do I have to use Exchange 2013?"

comment Ribbon gets hidden by default. How to fix that?
I like your solutions and I don't care about the visitors for now - but I also have been in the debugging dungeon in the ConsoleVisibleUtilities for me the problem is that the status bar is hidden even though the page is checked out to another user. Turns out that the check f (SPContext.Current.FileLevel != SPFileLevel.Published) fails as the page is found out to not be checked out. I used your solution and it works flawlessly now - always have the status bar even if the page is checked out to another user.

comment My Sites and Host Named Site Collections
Thanks for the insight, Marco! I think you got a bit off track as I wasn't questioning HNSC - just in combination with MySites it doesn't make sense to me. Besides that, of course you are correct that it is a whole new can of worms and it is nice to stick with "the old way of doing things", but HSNC is pretty cool when it comes to custom subdomains instead of intranet/sites/blabla and intranet/sites/nomnom. Of course there are some problems e.g. kerberos. But again: That's off track :)

comment How to correctly get a JavaScript SP.Web object's ID and URL before loading
Sometimes _spPageContextInfo is null. I found L_Menu_BaseUrl to be safer or even var context = new SP.ClientContext(); var relativeWebUrl = context.get_url();

comment Image rendition button in the ribbon (EditForm.aspx) is greyed out?
Found this little script from Waldek: blog.mastykarz.nl/… but still doesn't help my case. Image Renditions still grayed out on a list item with an Image field, pointing to some images library.

comment Image rendition button in the ribbon (EditForm.aspx) is greyed out?
Any luck solving the issue? Same problem here. Doesn't matter if I have the image in the current web or on site collection level. Image renditions work within the library, the renditions button on an Image field in another list is always disabled.
