comment Lists with null columns not returned when retrieving custom lists with Caml query and Javascript
Have you tried using SPServices? Their API is great for list manipulation, especially retrieving list items. It looks as if when you are getting the innerHTML if it is empty, then it is going to break. Might be the reason you are not getting data back because it cant find it. Try it. I will put the code block SPServices uses to get list items for you in an answer below. You can store the SPServices library in the _layouts folder. I would make a new file for it like js or something. Then you can reference it.

I am not sure if I follow you correctly or not, but remove the title from your where clause and put it into a general query. It should return null at least. CAMLViewFields: "<ViewFields><FieldRef Name='Title' /><ViewFields>" Are you capturing your 'title variable' in a foreach?

comment Approve workflow when approvals are > 50%
You do not want to have too many running processes. Just because it is paused does not mean it is not running in the background on your w3wp worker processes. This can cause slow down on the farm, and potential lockups which can be a nightmare if something gets corrupted in the process. I have seen it happen before.

You could use a CEWP with a document ready function to check the value of your approval count. Then, when it reaches the desired number, execute an update on a flag column in your list to trigger the workflow. This way you do not have any paused timer jobs, which can be a pain if you have too many.

comment external facing sharepoint site users are not able to check out documents
I would. I believe unless you are within the domain, the credentials might differ and not allow users to certain information; for example, I have to use this when I create list connected to my external SQL database. SharePoint expects, and also sends out, your AD credentials. So I need AAM to let SharePoint now to use the right credentials for access to the database and not to use SharePoints. I think this goes both ways. I hope this helps.

You might want to look into alternate access mapping in Central Admin for them. It could be because their external credentials are not coming accross AD the same as when they are on VPN or on the local domain.

comment Get list items only from a certain user
The user field in SharePoint for the user with presence type is populated by their SharePoint ID and not their name. Glad this worked for you, and I am going to use it too :) but you use the ID to get the user name with presence.

I know you can pause for a duration in SPD workflows; however, I would not think it would be a good idea. You do not want a bunch of paused workflow processes running at the same time per list item. It could cause problems. Have you though about using JQuery in a CEWP to check the time based on their selection? You could say for whatever selection they choose, check the date it was selected vs. todays date then update a flag in your list to trigger the workflow. This way you do not have any running timer services.

I think this is a master page change. You would have to do it in SPD or you can take the master page into VS and deploy the changes through there.

comment SPServices is the Document Checked Out SP2010
I looked into this field when I was trying to findout which one I could use for my logic. It seems as if SharePoint caches this information because once I checked it out and checked it back in, there were never any null values. It still had my name under this z:row node.

Excellent! This is what I figured. I am coming up to a situation in a new farm I am working in where this is going to come up A LOT! Thanks for the confirmation.
