comment In a search display template, is there a search property available for the actual text (k=…) in Srch.U or any of the search objects?
ctx.DataProvider should be available from inside your display template. As this is also used for rendering the results. No need to load other files.

comment How to Group Search Results Using Default Display Templates
You're working with the templates for a search result web part. In the CSWP the group template does not output any HTML. This is only done by the item and control templates, but for the search result web part it is different. The group template has HTML, so to solve your problem, it would be best to move the grouping code from the control template to the group template.

comment Troubleshot refiner gibberish
The crawled property with taxId contains the ID of the term. By default this property gets used with the auto-created managed property and that property consists of the label and id. Using the label value is better for working with refiners, otherwise it could be that your URLs get to large.

comment How to Group Search Results Using Default Display Templates
If you want to group your search results you'll have to write some code to do this. Which is explained in the article you referenced. You could maybe go for another approach, but this will always involve additional code in your display templates because this functionality is not out-of-the-box available. The explained approach can also be used in your templates. The provided templates can be used as a reference.

comment How do I format a Date for my local region in a customised SharePoint Display Template
Dave, you don't have to use third party libraries. You can make use of the format method that is available from the msajaxbundle.js file (is already loaded). Check my answer.

comment How do I format a Date for my local region in a customised SharePoint Display Template
Thanks, that's weird. What I wanted to say is that the regional settings of the site will also have impact on how the custom datetime fields get indexed.

comment How to deal with asynchronicity in display templates
I would do everything within the same template and not use the CoreRender function. CoreRender solution is good when you use the CSWP or SRWP because you are loading different results. But in the refiner template you are loading everything.
