I had turned off the connection to SharePoint, which turns off generating the .g.cs file, and when I turned it back on it still hadnt generated the .g.cs file until I had made a change to the .ascx page.

wha? it's basically the same solution. the key point is that you can put any html you want inside a list view web part row. people should be upvoting this like crazy! it's horrible that people are using a custom solution to do this.

Upon reading this answer years later, you probably just meant SQL Management Studio and you're just copying the whole database so not "touching" the database like i thought. but still seems like it wouldn't work

For reference: I had this problem with a calendar view, and no filters were listed in the view settings in the browser. PowerShell shows however that there is an implicit filter with all calendar views. The workaround was to use the "All Events" view instead of the Calendar view.
