By day, I'm a mild-mannered SharePoint infrastructure consultant for a Microsoft Gold partner. By night, I sleep. I've been working with SharePoint since 2006.

I have taken the time to write a few Microsoft exams and in turn Microsoft has graciously granted me the following certifications:

  • MCITP: SharePoint Administrator 2010
  • MCTS: SharePoint 2010, Configuration
  • MCTS: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Configuration
  • MCSE 2003
  • MCSA 2003

For reference, even though the TechNet article references MOSS 2007, the information and guidance still applies more or less to SharePoint 2010.

comment Sharepoint 2010 SP1 Content Database restore in Previous version of Sharepoint 2010
To further Mike's point, directly modifying a SharePoint database is the prime example for voiding your SharePoint warranty and is one of the questions Microsoft Support will try to get out of the way immediately so they don't waste any time dealing with you. "Rebuild your farm from scratch and see if the issue persists" will be their answer.

To clarify, the blog site's ServerRelativeURL property is "/sites/sitecollection/blog" following the restore.

I checked the ServerRelativeURL property of both the restored site collection and the restored blog site and they are both expected for the new farm. When you edit the image location in an affected blog post it will automatically resolve correctly for the new farm too, so this makes sense that the ServerRelativeURL is correct. I think the issue is perhaps the the HTML within the post is static and doesn't update during the backup/restore.

I know what I'm about to say isn't constructive, but this is one of the reasons it makes sense to follow Microsoft recommendation of creating all new web applications with claims authentication instead of classic. You could try recreating the web application with claims and migrating the content. Alternatively, use the SecureStore Service Application for mapping users in SharePoint to users in your external application and providing the SAML connection.

SharePoint 2001? Not sure if this a typo or not or if what I'm about to ask is silly... Are you asking about SharePoint Portal Server 2001 (v1) or SharePoint 2010 (v4)?

Will you help me clarify: is the issue that when they go to save anything, the dialog opens to SharePoint (instead of say, a local folder) even if the user wishes to save the document locally?

comment Why can't I create site collections in some CDBs?
Is this an out of the box site definition you're creating the site collection with or is it custom? Is this the same as the sites that work? You could try searching the 14\TEMPLATES (sub)folders for audit.xlsx to see which template it is using if not sure or to confirm.

If you take a look at the SQL permissions between a database where this works, and a database where it does not work, is there a difference in which accounts have access and what their rights are?

In Central Administration -> Application Management -> Manage Web Applications -> Select the web application you want to crawl -> In the Ribbon, click User Policy. Your crawl account should be in the list with "Full Read" permission. If not, add it.
