comment Warmup scripts?
yupp, that's even more relevant in 2013 than it was in 2007 / 2010 now that they are so many things search based. Glad it helped. Thanks for your comment.

It's a (missed !) partial copy / paste from the official technet article one can find here : technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx.

Actually, the flag can be changed in your backup file, if you create a backup (without it being locked) and then the same backup with the site collection locked, and you do a comparison of both files (content wise), you'll see only the timestamp and the lock state is stored. I successfully unlock a small backup by editing the offending two lines (one at the beginning and one later on) but never on the production backup that gave my customer issues (10gb+...) Good luck Phil

comment SharePoint 2013 - “Change the Look” breaks when editing master page
I wasn't able to reproduce but honestly, whenever I need to do heavy branding just like I did for my latest SP2013 project I'm leaving the design manager which wasn't bringing me the expected result (quality wise)

comment SharePoint 2010: Unable to open .mht files in browser. Prompts to save .mht to disk
and it was ok when you opened it locally ? Could you put it at the root of a site in IIS and call it from there to exclude SharePoint or make it the culprit in this behavior ?

Did you try with another .mht files ? Ensure that you can save a somehow simple one like the google homepage and open it straight away in IE8 and IE9 then upload it in SP and try to open it without saving it. This might also be an issue with specific mht file(s)

Extremely glad to read that you succeeded. Thanks a lot for providing this feedback, might help others later on :)

comment GAC and Signing assembly with strong name
that's a huge topic, I'd rather pick any SharePoint Development book from Wrox, OReilly, APRess, ... to get you started. You could also check community projects like spsf.codeplex.com :)

name of the site means your internal "dev" server (or a target one), it has no impact to the final WSP. You'll have to create a SharePoint project in all case - knowing now your requirements - but it's still easy to start with an empty SP project (which will help you to create the WSP & send to gac for quick testing) then adding your visual webpart & web service(s).

comment How to create site collection by using feature?
you have to be careful & understand the difference between a site collection (SPSite) and a "site" (SPWeb). You can create subsite in a sandbox solution while you won't be able to create another site collection (even on a farm solution that would be hard). In your sandbox solution, you could do something like SPContext.Current.Web.Webs.Add(projectName, projectName, "Project site for " + projectName, (uint) currentWeb.Locale.LCID, Microsoft.SharePoint.SPWebTemplate.WebTemplateSTS, true, false) to create a new child web / site (and not a site collection !)

comment Friendly URL and Content Deployment
I'm pretty sure it's because the terms won't be the same accross farms (guid wise) unless you first restore a backup from source to production environment (but what about future changes...). Setting up a cross farms Shared Services might help I think but not sure the lovely content deployment jobs will see this architecture.

comment Do I need Office 2013 & the premium edition for Visual Studio for my development and production environments?
Yupp, but the add on is free and will give you nice addition. You should really install it on the top of your Visual Studio 2012 installation (while we're all waiting for the lovely CKS:DEV extension !)

comment Why is the “SharePoint Administration” Service not started by default on SP2013?
The first ones were deployed manually + powershell script to provision the service applications as needed, following the official MS deployment guide. Once I knew what I was doing, I relly on autospinstaller.codeplex.com to automate the staging & production environments but end result is similar. So at the end of the configuration wizard (or binary installation ?), the service was properly configured and automatically started.

comment Why is the “SharePoint Administration” Service not started by default on SP2013?
That's not the same when doing farm install. Right now I have around 10 environments in SP2013 (farm installation), all of them having the SPAdminV4 configured properly and starting automatically without issue. (and there is a mix of SP2013 Standard and SP2013 Enterprise although it won't change, foundation should behave the same)

comment Why is the “SharePoint Administration” Service not started by default on SP2013?
Understood, thanks for the clarification. Do you still have the issue after a reboot or running the SharePoint 2013 product configuration wizard ? You installed all the required KB before installation ? I quickly scan through the official deployment guide for standalone installation but saw nothing, it should be started but as stated, I got issue with the 2013 CTP and also in 2010).

comment How can I distinguish between internal users & external users when licensing SharePoint 2013?
upvoted, but keep in mind that external users should be completely "external" to the company to be entitled for the free license. If they are collaborators or binded to the company in some way, they need to have their own license like internal users. It's more for scenario like external communities or external partner site (which will have unknown users that are not part of the current company) that this "come for free" applies :)

comment How can I provision the search center to my visual studio solution?
Thanks James. My answer was a little bit short on description but indeed, either a feature receiver, or if you are working with publishing site definition, you can add one to your provisioning template.
