No, it's not. And why wouldn't that work? When you call authentication.asmx for webservices, you are returned a token which is then used to authenticate webservice calls by inserting the cookie in a cookiecontainer which is passed along with the call. If I was to place that cookie on the client computer instead, wouldn't that have the same result? Nevertheless we are looking at the STS implementation as well.

comment List set for anonymous but public cannot view
Are you sure there aren't any resources those pages are using (master pages, css, images) which are in a location which is not accessible by anonymous users? Also check for non published content.

Stripped version tag because those are not allowed as far as I know. Version is included in the post itself.

Ok, but is it necessary to do so? Can't we achieve the same with an authentication provider? I mean: it is possible to call authentication.asmx to get a valid security token, so we only need to get that on the correct place on the users PC, right?

comment Very slow full crawl
The hardware performance cannot be the issue. This is because initially, the crawl is fast and indexes a lot of items. It's only at the last part of the crawl that everything slows down to a halt and seems to be hanging. If this was a hardware bottleneck; wouldn't the entire process be a lot slower? We're not indexing remote content, no customizations either.

I see a lot of security changes, but a full crawl is also slow. In the blog you link to, they seem to scope this problem to incremental crawls only. Doesnt that imply this cannot be the problem? The crawl issue doesn't apply to our situation either.

comment Stuck in “Preview Page” mode in SharePoint 2013
Isn't your page in preview mode, instead of the master page? Please check if the page has been checked out, or is in a draft version and perhaps revert it to the previous published version instead.

Had to give Shane the bounty because of the pointer towards the 2007 -> 2010 upgrade issue.

Your answer helped me find the correct cause, which was the 2007 --> 2010 migration. Thanks.

Any update? Facing the exact same problem here. SPNs are set, trusted delegation is set, still ANONYMOUS LOGON errors.
