comment What is a good approach for generating serial numbers in SharePoint Online?
And to think I've been working with SharePoint for a year and didn't remember this feature... The ID column might be the right choice, although it is specific to each list and hence can't be used site-globally. Might use a calculated column based on ID. Thanks.

comment How do I handle concurrency problems related to event receivers?
Thanks, this is very useful. The part about checking publishing from the SPListItem not having to check the SPFile is especially useful.

comment How do I connect with SharePoint Online Web Services in order to access list and taxonomy data?
The error message only indicates that the credentials you have supplied aren't accepted by the server. If you don't find the answer, you should probably submit a separate question to sharepoint.stackexchange.com with the details of what you are trying to do. Users are discouraged from asking questions under an existing question. However, your issue is probably related to the service.Credentials object and the values you've set it to. Look at the NetworkCredentials class in .NET and see if it give you anything useful.

comment How do I efficiently deploy a SharePoint project first to a test environment, then production?
Well, in this case it is the root site of a site collection (with lots of subsites), but it might be different for another project. It has one feature which is deployed from Visual Studio. Deploying the exported site and code separately seems fair enough, but is there a reasonable way to ensure that the test and prod environments are similar enough to not cause problems when the code is deployed? If deploying to an existing site collection, they will be different. Installing Visual Studio on Prod to debug things seems like a terrible hack.
