Reinstall? Perhaps you should first try to run SharePoint configuration wizard before going for a reinstall?

If all that author wants is to fill in the form field with current logged in user, then i think it would be much better just to use mentioned SPServices library to fill in the form field with javascript.

comment Office 2010 doesn't integrate with WSS3?
no, the Starter edittion works on Windows 7 32 bit but the Home & Business on Windows 7 64 bit doesn't (They are on different PC's). So i guess the issue is with my office installation or perhaps that i'm using Windows 7 64-bit? I don't know, i will still have to look into this issue before documenting it as an answer.

Uh, oh, it's not that Office 2010 doesn't support SharePoint 2007. On other Windows 7 32bit machine i tried editing a document with Office 2010 Starter and it works! Even the Content Controls work! I didn't even expect that a Starter edition would support SharePoint at all.

comment Read-only column in a SharePoint list
It works! I'v been searching for how to make field ReadOnly for users in WSS3 but still allow updating field value programmatically in code. Thank you for solution. And the DataSheet view says the field is read only - you cannot edit it as expected. Note that SharePoint Foundation has FieldRef attribute ReadOnlyClient. Another note: If we set ShowInDisplayForm, then the field appears in display form, but if we set ShowInEditForm, the field won't appear there (also expected behaviour).

What is the type of Email ID column? Is it just a plain Text or a User column?

comment Is it possible to add user picture column for task list based on AssignedTo field?
Thank you, this works. I actually modified existing AssignedTo field and set ShowField="NameWithPicture" to make it work. Thank you for solution. However if i choose to add a new field with similar schema and a FieldRef attribute, it won't show picture, but i can choose to show simple text fields like email, etc.

Thank you, i'll take a look at this. And having a name is no problem, i need that too. And anyway I suspect if you change ShowField to "PictureDisp" it will only show picture. By the way for WSS3 i have only a 12 hive :)

comment STSADM.exe, PowerShell v2.0 and Management Shell
@MikeOryszak Sure, you can use powershell as it were programming language and so you can manage SharePoint 2007. Its just that SharePoint 2007 by default doesn't provide any powershell cmdlets as SP2010 does (you have to write for yourself if you want...). I commented this so that author could see how SharePoint evolves and who knows if stsadm.exe would be developed if powershell was available earlyer?
