comment Guess SharePoint version based on connection parameters
Sorry but did not understand what I need to do exactly. How would that translate to C# code. Do I need to connect to the SharePoint site or call some service endpoint?

Of course I can do that as the last resort but wanted to know if there was a way to avoid doing that.

Thanks for your help so far. My problem still is maintaining a single code base that works against both 2010 and 2013. Can I use the 2013 Client Object Model assemblies against SP 2010?

do you know how I can get the SharePoint version via code so that I can have both pieces of code and can switch based on the version

Seems that this will not work against 2010. Can you confirm this? I get an error - Method "GetUserById" does not exist. I want to maintain common code for 2010 and 2013 and use the 2013 assemblies

comment Detect that an item has changed after it is tagged
SP 2010. I tag the item via the UI and also via calling the SocialDataWebService.AddTag method

comment 'Url' for SharePoint item in SocialDataService.GetTags(url)
Since I am using the Client Object Model, I used the 'List.Forms.GetByPageType(PageType.DisplayForm)' method.

What is the value that should be used to index the 'Forms' collection? Is that something I get from the API or can I use a fixed value there?
