Be careful of the order the deployment actually runs the code. It sounds like the original attempt creates field before ReadyToRunChecklistOptions actually exists. You can also try using an event receivers FeatureActivated and update the lookup field there

when you say a new word template, do you mean change the documents content type? if so any fields that remain the same should not be erased. If the fields changed but you still want the data you will need a PowerShell script to get each document, save current document fields in variables, change the ContentType, save the variables to the new fields. Move to Next doucment

The default OOB refinement panel passes the same date range value as I use, just with the 'r' parameter. I guess for the time being I will just set the range A..B where A is some value older than the system & a special case instead of the proper ..B format
