The list view threshold is a value defined in Central Administration that limits the number of items that may be viewed or acted upon at a time, and is intended to prevent a performance impact that may be incurred if such an action is taken. This may be bypassed at the administrator's discretion by using object model code, or during specific hours of the day (usually overnight).
