We are using SharePoint 2010, with some users using Office 2007 and and others Office 2010. We have several document libraries that require users to check out documents. If a document is not checked out, the user can click on the link and open the document.
The problem is that once you check out a document, you cannot open the document from the link. The only way to open the file is to open Word and browse to the file. If the document is checked-out, the user receives the following prompt: "Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open the file." When the user clicks OK, nothing happens. The file does not open.
However, if the document is checked out to someone else, you can click on the link and open a read-only version of the document in Word.
