I seem to have broken something while attempting to extend the SharePoint web application to use a different port.

First, I extended the application. Then I "unextended" it using Delete->Remove SharePoint from IIS Web Site, and deleted the custom zone. Immediately, I got an error when attempting to use search. This was apparently due to a NullReferenceException in CoreResultWebPart, which seems to be a common issue.

I then attempted to delete and recreate the Search Service Application. I was able to delete it, but when attempting to create a new one I got this:

Errors were encountered during the configuration of the Search Service Application.

I found what seemed like a relevant ULS log entry:

CreateSearchApp failed with exception. System.InvalidOperationException: Service application configuration section not found.

The new Search Service Application is present in the list of service applications, with status "Error". There is also a Search Administration Web Service for Search Service Application with status "Stopped".

I'm not sure what to try next. Can anyone help?
