Ok I have a custom built sharepoint list on a standard aspx page with no sharepoint header. With Sharepoint Designer I have set parameters on my list with several filters. On the page I have several check boxes and a search text box. When I want to search for a specific field value I check that specific field. When I want to search all fields I check all. Note: my search works well whenever I have a value. However, it renders no results when I place a wildcard "*" in my search field. My goal here is to get the list to just display all the fields when nothing is placed in the search box. In my code I discovered that if I remove the xml query, my goal of displaying all works. However, I am not aware of a dynamic way to accomplish this. Essentially I want to dynamically remove this:

<Query>
 <Where>
  <Contains>
   <FieldRef Name="Product"/>
    <Value Type="Text">{FilterField1}</Value>
   </Contains>
  </Where>
</Query>

Is there a way to do this or am I over-thinking this? If this can not be accomplished is there any other way to produce all records when the search box is empty other than the wildcard (*) as it does not work?
