I try to implement an internet site with SharePoint 2013 using the new concept of cross site publishing.
Content is stored in an authoring site collection and crawled through the search service app. I consume the search index data inside a "publishing" site collection that is accesible to anonymous internet users with the help of catalog connections (source lists are shared as catalogs).
On the publishing site I set created a new custom master page and I am going to create 2 custom page layouts (mostly because I need many web part zones on the pages with a pre defined layout).
Now when I set up the catalog connections (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj679901.aspx) (I use the integrated mode) under the "Category Page" and "Item Page" sections I have the option to either use an existing page or create a new page and select a "Master Page".
What I don't get is why I have to select a "Master Page" and not a "Page Layout". Ideally I want to select one of the Page Layouts I already created for the normal pages so SharePoint uses that as base and inserts its CBS or Catalog Item WebParts and stuff into it. But as I have to select a master page a new page is created together with a new Page Layout based on some kind of default layout that has nothing to do with my custom layouts and I would have to put all my web part zones and other stuff into it again manually which would be time consuming.
Can someone shed some light for me into this?
