I'm planning to patch new CUs to SharePoint MOSS 2007. I tried to patch in staging environment and it is completely fine. Now I'm planning to patch on production environment and so I need to plan a possible downtime for SharePoint.
My problem is, if I need to roll back the patching in case of some failure, I don't have enough time to restore all the backup databases (Taking backup of all SharePoint databases will take about 10 hours and restoring will take about 20 hours - in this case I'm not allowed to plan such a long downtime).
I'm thinking of just backing up the front end servers, ca server, and just the SharePoint Config Database (excluding Content Databases). We have about 170 site collections, and so I don't want to detach and reattach the Content Databases before and after the patching.
My Question is what are the possible affects of not taking Content Databases Backup before patching? Do I really need to restore Content Databases as a rollback for failure of SharePoint Patching?
Thank you for your help in advance
