Creating a button on current list

Question

I am completely new to programming in sharepoint. I have a site where I need to add a button to an already created list. The button needs to be available for each item. The button will simply take the list item and add it to a second list. I've seen a lot of people talk about workflows, but my sharepoint admin say they are not available in this list due to it being upgraded from previous version. I'm working with Sharepoint 2010.

Are both lists within the same site collection and are there common columns shared across both source and target list?
