We have a bunch of SPD 2010 workflows using InfoPath 2010 forms that are used for multiple levels of approval for various user requests.

The Problem:

A user submits an item for approval by their manager. There is a two day turnaround policy on requests so I have set the due date to be 1 day after the task is assigned to the approver. I have built the forms in a way that if the user knows their manager is not in the office or away that they can select a substitute. The problem is that when the manager is in the office but for some reason cannot action the task/leaves/get's sick etc. before they can reassign the task to someone else.

The question:

1) Is there a way to route the workflow back to the Originator telling him that the task hasn't been actioned yet and giving him the ability to assign it to someone else? I know that the originator is able to edit the task from within SharePoint but I don't want them to be able to action the task on behalf of their managers or be able to see all the other tasks either.

If anyone is wondering, I figured this out by setting the Duration of the task to 1 day. Then in the Approval task under When the task Expires I added a Collect Data from a User with a People Picker. Then I retrieve the value and use a Reassign task to the new manager. Works pretty well but the only downfall is that even if I set the people picker to not allow blanks it doesn't seem to keep the setting. – Rick Feb 27 at 13:38
