We have files that are NOT within the sharepoint infrastructure and would like to link to them in certain lists. Is there a way that a user can edit a list item and add a URL to the share location by either dragging the file on to the browser window or selecting browse and navigating to the file. The link will then be displayed in the list column for easy navigation to said file.

Hello, What version of SharePoint do you have? Foundation, server? How do you plan to implement this? Using OOTB GUI interface or programmatically? – Andrew Adamich Feb 15 '13 at 7:58
