How to get signin url value using sharepoint url?

Question

In claims based authentication using ADFS2.0, We will be automatically redirected to the signin url and tries to authenticate. That means we are giving only sharepoint url, username and password as input. In case of program, we need to give even the signin url. When sharepoint is already configured with a signin url why do we need to give it again. Please explain.
