Claims FBA with a remote active directory membership provider

Question

I plan on setting up Claims FBA using the AD membership provider, but I would like to use a AD Domain that is remote (not the domain that the SP Farm lives on). Is this possible? Is it any different (other than the connection string) from using the local AD as the user store? Perhaps I need a trust defined between both domains?
