SharePoint Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for SharePoint enthusiasts. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Some of our intranet (SharePoint 2010) users are having problems opening documents (.docx, .xlsx) in Office Web Apps. For some of our users, reinstalling Silverlight or Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support has solved the problem, but some of them are still having issues opening documents. The most common error message is:

Word Web app encountered an unexpected error

The following message appears in the ULS log quite frequently:

w3wp.exe Office Web Apps Unexpected Null siteKey; canaries are invalid

I'm thinking that this may be related to the problem. Does anyone know exactly what the message means, and if it could be related to the problem? If so, how can it be solved?

Our intranet is based on SharePoint 2010 Standard SP1 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. The cumulative update from February 2012 has been applied to the SharePoint installation.
